TUE1. The State of Codecs 2023

10:00 AM2023-02-142023-02-14

Tuesday, February 14: 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. (ET) / 7:00 a.m. - 8:00 a.m. (PT)

The codec landscape has been relatively quiet, at least in terms of new entrants. But the device landscape is more crowded than ever, so it hasn’t gotten any easier to determine which codecs are table stakes and which ones you can do without. We sit down with a panel of experts to assess where all the major codecs (H.264, H.265, VP9, and AV1), as well as newer entrants like EVC and LCEVC, should fit in your streaming strategy.

Tuesday, February 14: 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. (ET) / 8:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. (PT)

Content distributors can get more functionality and efficiency from the edge than ever before, but that doesn’t mean the traditional CDN is obsolete. In fact, the challenge today is to successfully integrate the edge with CDNs and cloud services, and that’s no mean feat. Our panelists offer insights into the latest developments in edge compute and discuss how the edge can more seamlessly work with CDNs and the cloud.

Live conferences and trade shows are back! WED1. Approaching Zero Latency: How Close Can We Get?

10:00 AM2023-02-152023-02-15

Wednesday, February 15: 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. (ET) / 7:00 a.m. - 8:00 a.m. (PT)

Throwing the laws of physics to the wind, some tech solutions providers still promise “zero latency.” We all know that’s impossible, but we’re getting closer than ever. Setting aside the business cases for ultra-low latency (which we’ll address in “The Future of Interactive Streaming” on Feb. 16), what are the latest technological advances that are enabling these sub-0.5-millisecond latency numbers, what are the trade-offs to employing them, and how low can we go?

Live-streaming audiences are bigger than ever, with tentpole sporting events regularly drawing tens of millions of viewers. Needless to say, delivering to audiences of that size isn’t easy, especially while maintaining the type of video quality and features that these demanding viewers have come to expect. We may not truly be “post-pandemic,” and enterprises are still figuring out what the future of work is going to look like. One thing is certain, though: Video—whether for all-hands meetings, workplace collaboration, or outbound communications—is at the center of it all. WED5. The Cloud vs. On-Prem vs. Hybrid Dilemma

04:00 PM2023-02-152023-02-15

Wednesday, February 15: 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. (ET) / 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. (PT)

The cloud is limitless, right? Well, we all know that everything has constraints, and in business, they are most often driven by financial returns. As the massive shift to cloud computing continues, there is emergent conversation about the tipping point of the cost/benefit calculation. At what point does renting a service cost more than just owning it yourself? Custom-built hardware has the potential to deliver improved performance, but integration can be a challenge. There's a third choice: hybrid computing. A number of organizations are looking to hosting providers to split the difference in “best of both worlds” type deployments, offering direct access to scalable compute and lowering data access charges, while maintaining a fixed hardware interface in a collocation facility to act as the ingress/egress point for service delivery. Early returns on hybrid are promising, but ultimately every case is different. Our panelists help you clarify the questions you need to ask to make the right choice for your business.

Thursday, February 16: 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. (ET) / 8:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. (PT)

The advertising vs. subscription debate is as old as online video itself. But is that all there is? While those two approaches to monetization will continue to sit at the core of the streaming media business, they don’t apply to all streaming services or producers. We’ll look at innovative approaches to revenue generation, from new twists on subscription to paying viewers to watch ads.
