NASA to Broadcast Apollo Moon Landing 50th Anniversary Show with Teradek Cube Encoders

Kennedy Space Center, FL(17 Jul 2019)

NASA is once again using Teradek to deliver a special program to millions of viewers around the world. Teradek Cube encoders will be deployed to send high quality video over IP from different regions in the country to the broadcast facility at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

July 20, 2019 marks the 50th anniversary of NASA’s moon landing, and NASA will be celebrating by producing a live, multi-site 2-hour TV special for NASA-TV and The Science Channel. Teradek Cubes will be used by NASA in a mix of transmission technologies alongside their own video network, and Teradek’s Core management platform will be used to remotely route & configure encoders in the cloud. Program feeds will be delivered from several locations including Seattle, Houston, Huntsville, Washington DC, and Wapakoneta (birthplace of Neil Armstrong) to the Kennedy Space Center, where the final program will be live produced and distributed to TV networks.

NASA relied on Teradek in 2017 to provide live coverage of the Great American Eclipse, where the agency used Core to publish the show to Facebook, YouTube, Twitch, and NASA.gov simultaneously, which received over 53 million combined views. With such a successful broadcast, NASA has chosen to continue using Teradek solutions for their video over IP end-to-end workflow.

Teradek Cubes are agile, scalable HEVC encoders and decoders that transmit HD video point to point over the public internet. Core is Teradek’s cloud-based stream management platform that acts as a distribution center for routing live video from Teradek encoders to their destinations (live platforms or decoders). Together, they offer a powerful solution for video contribution & distribution to/from multiple locations.

“We’re very excited to be working closely with NASA to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. NASA’s production team demands the best from their broadcast systems, and Teradek is proud to offer our services and deliver exceptional video to NASA’s worldwide audience. We anticipate spectacular results in quality, engagement and satisfaction for the upcoming program.” - Jon Landman, VP of Sales at Teradek.
