Mux Raises $9m in Series A Funding from Accel to Give Companies Insights Into Video Performance

San Francisco, CA(18 Apr 2017)

Mux, Inc., a performance analytics provider for video developers and media publishers, has secured $9 million in Series A funding led by Accel. Daniel Levine of Accel will join Mux’s board of directors. The funding will further Mux’s mission to improve the quality of experience for viewers of online video with real-time and actionable analytics.

"Watching video is increasingly how people choose to spend their time,” said Daniel Levine, Partner at Accel. “Yet companies don't fully understand the impact of video on their business. These businesses are essentially flying blind because of outdated and generic technology. The Mux team, who collectively created Zencoder and Video.js, understands video products as well as anyone. That experience shows with the Mux analytics platform which gives developers the data they need to build reliable and scalable video platforms."

Delivering video seamlessly online remains challenging and expensive, and problems such as rebuffering, errors, low quality, slow load times, and broken ad experiences continue to frustrate viewers. Mux gives online video publishers data and insight to tackle these common issues and build better video experiences through a powerful analytics dashboard and real-time alerts backed by machine learning. Publishers can use this data in a number of ways: running A/B tests, measuring CDN or video player performance in order to make more informed buying decisions, empowering customer support with insight into individual viewing sessions, or tracking (and fixing) hard-to-find errors.

Customers using Mux to improve their video performance include PBS, IGN, Livestream, Wistia, and Funny or Die.

"Developers need data to run infrastructure, but most online video publishers still don't measure and monitor their streaming video, " said Jon Dahl, CEO and co-founder of Mux. "If you've ever wondered why a particular streaming video site performed badly, lack of data is almost certainly a part of the problem. Mux’s analytics platform gives developers the data they need to build reliable and scalable video platforms.”

Accel joins a number of other top investors who had previously invested in Mux, including Y Combinator, Susa Ventures, Advancit Capital, SV Angel, Lowercase Capital, Liquid 2 Ventures, Pathbreaker Ventures, and prominent founders including Parse’s Ilya Sukhar and Heroku’s James Lindenbaum.

The Team Behind Mux

This is the second video startup for the team behind Mux. In 2010, they created Zencoder, which became the leader in cloud video encoding before selling to Brightcove in 2012. The Mux team today includes engineers from YouTube, Facebook, and Twitch. While at Zencoder, the founders of Mux also created Video.js, the most widely used open-source video player online. Video.js helped pioneer the move from Flash video to HTML5 video, and today it is used by Instagram, Twitter, Microsoft, and over 100,000 other sites. In addition, the Mux founders are also the organizers of Demuxed , a conference for video engineers held in San Francisco in October, and have helped plant video technology meetups in cities around the world.
