Beamr Honored with Technology and Engineering Emmy® Award for its Content-Adaptive Video Encoding Technology

Beamr's content-adaptive encoding technology cuts video bandwidth by up to 50%, reducing congestion on backbone and last-mile networks

Tel Aviv(26 Jan 2021)

Beamr, the leading developer of content-adaptive video encoding technologies, today announces that it has been honored by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) with a Technology and Engineering Emmy® Award for its development of Perceptual Metrics for Video Encoding Optimization. The award ceremony will take place on October 10th, 2021 during the NAB 2021 conference.

Beamr has developed a patented quality measure called BQM (Beamr Quality Measure), which reliably quantifies the perceptual quality loss introduced in an image or video frame due to encoding artifacts. When used in a video encoding system, the quality measure ensures that the perceptual quality of the video is preserved even when bitrate is reduced. Beamr tuned BQM with real feedback from thousands of users, using a unique crowdsourced subjective testing system.

Beamr has integrated BQM into Beamr 4 and Beamr 5, its software H.264 and HEVC encoder SDKs, as a new rate control mode called CABR - Content Adaptive BitRate mode. CABR enables reducing the bitrate of encoded video video streams by 30-50% without compromising perceptual quality. The reduced-bitrate streams are fully compatible with the H.264 and HEVC standards, and do not require any special decoder or player on the receiving end. Beamr’s CABR has also been integrated with hardware H.264 and HEVC encoders, enabling higher performance for real-time content-aware compression. Beamr is now implementing BQM in silicon hardware, enabling massive scale content-adaptive encoding of user-generated content, surveillance videos and cloud gaming streams. Beamr’s customers enjoy the benefits of lower bitrate streams which reduce congestion on residential networks as well as telecom and MSO backbones.

“We are extremely thrilled to receive industry recognition in the form of a Technical and Engineering Emmy® Award for the breakthrough technology developed by Beamr” said Sharon Carmel, Founder & CEO of Beamr. “Since founding the company 12 years ago, our mission has always been to remove unnecessary bits from compressed streams, and now that video is consuming over 80% of Internet traffic, this mission is becoming more important than ever. I am incredibly proud of our research and development teams, who overcame immense challenges in creating a technology that is safe - never compromising quality, effective - reducing bitrate by up to 50%, and efficient - implemented in real-time for live, low-delay video streaming optimization. With 48 patents granted for our video compression and media optimization technologies, we are determined to continue and drive efficiency in large-scale video workflows”.
