For broadcasters trying to reach a global audience with mobile video, optimizing for the Apple iPhone and much of the BlackBerry line is crucial. This information comes from a second quarter 2012 report put out by mobile video company Vuclip, which ranked the top ten devices for global mobile video use.

The list will come as a surprise for Americans, who might not realize the global popularity of the BlackBerry line. Also, the Apple iPad is absent from the list. Vuclip notes that the iPad is gaining quickly, and could be the first tablet to enter the top ten next quarter.

Here's the second quarter top ten list from Vuclip:

  1. Apple iPhone
  2. BlackBerry 8520
  3. BlackBerry Bold 9780
  4. BlackBerry 9300
  5. BlackBerry 9700
  6. BlackBerry 9900
  7. BlackBerry Torch 980
  8. Samsung Galaxy II
  9. Nokia C3-00
  10. Nokia E5

"While the iPhone is extremely popular, it may be surprising to those in the U.S. to see the tremendous range and depth of adoption with regard to BlackBerry and Nokia handsets," says Nickhil Jakatdar, CEO of Vuclip. "Our view is that it is the proliferation of mass market, low-cost smart phones in emerging markets that are impacting the overall adoption of mobile video and driving expectations around the consumers' experience with it."

Vuclip's September 2012 Global Video Insights report is based on data from over 40 million monthly global unique viewers.
