October Video Rankings: The Indies Take Over

Article Featured Image

October, is seems, was a strong month for original online content. The comScore video rankings are out for October, and the surprise this time is that Vimeo and Maker Studios edged onto the content video top ten list. That's a good thing for fans of the arty video-sharing site Vimeo, which sometimes seems more talked about than watched, or the hip multi-channel network Maker Studios. Just as eye-opening are the properties they displaced: CBS Interactive and Viacom Digital fell off the list. Could this be a sign that online viewers are more interested in original online video than studio or broadcast video when they sit down at their computers. The comScore Video Metrix, which supplies these rankings, currently only measure desktop and notebook views.

Google and Facebook won the month, in which 189.0 million unique U.S. viewers watched 49.1 billion videos. That's up slightly from September.

On the ad properties chart, AOL (which now includes Adap.tv), Google, and BrightRail took the top positions. Americans viewed 24.5 billion online video ads in October, an increase from the 22.9 billion video ads viewed in September. Viewers watched an average of 141.2 video ads last month. BrightRoll enjoyed the strongest reach, serving ads to 54.3 percent of the total U.S. population.
