Second-screen companion service ConnecTV is launching a national social media platform today, one that offers a variety of contextual information and social networking tools for broadcast TV viewers.

ConnecTV works through a free iPad app or through a standard browser. The company promises versions for the iPhone and Android smartphones and tablets within 45 days.

A strong list of partners could help ConnecTV succeed. It's working with a consortium of nine TV broadcasters that include Belo Corp., Cox Media Group, E.W. Scripps Co., Gannett Broadcasting, Hearst Television Inc., Media General Inc., Meredith Corp., Post-Newsweek Stations Inc., and Raycom Media. That gives ConnecTV over 200 local ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, and CW channels, with a possible reach of 76 million households.

The ConnecTV service will deliver synchronized second-screen content that includes play-by-play statistics, news, and quotes. Users can also create virtual viewing parties with friends. The platform integrates with Twitter and Facebook.

ConnecTV is working with broadcast partners to create tailored local content, such as conversations with on-air personalities, polls, and promotions for upcoming news stories and specials. The platform will also deliver second-screen content synchronized to ads, delivering marketing efforts designed to engage the viewer.
