Securing Mobile Video a Challenge for Even the Biggest Enterprises

Curious but true: Jeff Williams, director and product evangelist, global IT, end user services at Oracle, spoke on a panel about enterprise mobile video at the 2014 Streaming Media West conference—even though the company doesn't yet support mobile video internally. As Williams says, a lot of companies don't support mobile video internally because of the security challenges.

Williams says the company recently put an internal video system in place, but it only works with desktops and notebooks. The system was an answer to employee demand.

"Mobile for enterprise video is a challenge for a lot of companies. It's been a challenge for us," Williams said. "Two-plus years ago we had growing demand within the company for sharing and distributing video content, but we had no easy way, no standard platform way to do it. So we had people uploading files and using file-sharing services—ones external to Oracle that we didn't approve— like Dropbox and things like that, to internal file shares."

Internal departments started creating their own video distribution systems, but the results weren't scalable, cost-effective, or secure.

"We saw that need and realized we need to come up with and deploy an official platform to the whole company and meet all the various needs of our stakeholders or LLBs across Oracle," Williams continued. "We launched a project to deliver an enterprise video platform. This was our mission statement, actually: 'The enterprise video service would enable employees, executives, and organizations to find, share, and create high-quality video content.' These were our priorities going into it."

The video system needed to be secure above all else. Not surprisingly, the company started with desktop video, Williams says. To hear more about the challenges facing mobile video in the enterprise, watch the full video below and download the moderator's presentation.
