Aliso Viejo, CA(19 Oct 2010)

Smith Micro Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: SMSI), a leading developer and marketer of software solutions and services for the mobility market, today launched Vidio, a carrier-grade software platform for delivering high-quality video content efficiently and reliably to consumers, regardless of their mobile device. The platform's RF-based, adaptive streaming capability empowers carriers and content owners to easily reach Apple, Android, Symbian, RIM and Windows Mobile users, and enhances the end-user experience by providing on-the-fly access to the latest online content in high-quality formats.

Vidio supports all industry-standard video file formats. Its proprietary transcoding and streaming technologies eliminate complexities for wireless providers, adapting content as it streams to suit both the requirements of a particular device as well as current network conditions. For cable providers, Vidio extends service reach beyond the TV, DVR and computer to the mobile device, enabling delivery to a variety of tablets and phones, such as Androids, iPhones, iPads and the latest tablets being introduced in the market. The solution provides a unique opportunity for service providers to deploy video in their networks without complexities.

The platform widens distribution channels for content owners through a single, high-quality asset processed for any video-capable device, including 3G- and 4G-compatible phones. This eliminates the long-standing problem faced in the multi-screen video delivery market for creating and maintaining multiple recipes for different screen formats.

"We're helping wireless carriers and cable providers easily deliver video to customers, regardless of their device, to better meet user demand and grow their businesses," said William W. Smith, Jr., President and CEO, Smith Micro Software. "With our latest product, we overcome fragmentation in the mobile industry caused by countless technologies and devices, and solved the most significant challenge in mobile media-ensuring a high-quality video experience regardless of connection strength."

Vidio enables content-viewing on-the-fly, while just-in-time video delivery enables the user to view content quickly while minimizing bandwidth cost.

In addition, Vidio offers the following features:

  • On-demand and live content delivery
  • RF-optimized adaptive streaming
  • Scalability of up to 4500 HTTP sessions from a single server
  • Follow Me TV capabilities across mobile, web and IPTV
  • Real-time ad insertion and rotation for all mobile devices
  • Extensive analytics and reporting
  • iPad application content portal for an enhanced TV-like experience
  • Load balancing for best server utilization and optimization

In addition, to help customers with increased traffic during live events, Smith Micro offers an on-demand Capacity Overflow streaming solution managed and hosted at its datacenters. Along with Capacity Overflow, Smith Micro offers a Redundant Overflow Insurance policy in case customer's servers go offline for any number of reasons, allowing Smith Micro to pick up and maintain business continuity.
