RGB Networks, the leader in network video processing, has expanded its product offerings with today's introduction of its Application Media Server (AMS), a multi-purpose transcoding server based on the V6 product from Ripcode, which was recently acquired by RGB.
The AMS is a transcoding and transport packaging appliance ideal for the delivery of live and on-demand programming to mobile devices. It supports file-based on-demand transcoding (ODT), live-stream processing and file-to-file transcoding, which are key to processing programs into the codecs required for mobile, Internet and IPTV video. Complementing its comprehensive transcoding capabilities, the AMS uniquely supports integrated adaptive streaming and progressive download, and leading smart phone delivery protocols, which are critical for delivering programming to mobile devices. The compact, one rack unit form factor of the AMS makes it easy to deploy anywhere within a service provider's network.

The AMS can be deployed as a standalone server or can be clustered for high availability and load balancing, scaling to thousands of concurrent transcodes. The AMS can also work in conjunction with RGB's industry leading three screen live streaming delivery platform, the Video Multiprocessing Gateway (VMG™). The VMG is the industry's highest capacity transcoder with integrated SCTE-30/35 live ad insertion capabilities. It utilizes a carrier-class chassis with hot swap and N:M module redundancy, with modules uniquely spanning the range of platform technologies to optimize for the various applications -- FPGA, ASIC, as well as general purpose compute platforms. This combination of the VMG and AMS creates the first-ever distributed transcoder/packager architecture that leverages scalable IP multicast networks in the core network and HTTP or streaming content delivery network (CDN) architecture at the edge, giving operators a flexible transition path to a TV Everywhere envi ronment. The VMG is highly suitable for scalable live stream transcoding, while the AMS can concurrently handle ODT requests.
