Ozer Announces Webinar on Content-Aware Encoding; Leveraging Lessons Learned from Netflix’s Per-Title Optimization Post

Netflix's per-title optimization is improving video quality, decreasing bandwidth, and improving QoE. This webinar teaches how to leverage those lessons for your own video delivery.

Galax(11 Jan 2016)

Jan Ozer today announced a webinar titled, “Content-Aware Encoding: Applying Lessons Learned from Netflix's Per-Title Optimization Post.” The webinar will be held on January 26, 2016 at 2:00 EST, and will cost $29.00, plus Eventbrite fees. For more information on the webinar, and to sign-up, visit here

Streaming producers use an “encoding ladder” to encode videos into multiple files for adaptive streaming. In its recent post, Per-Title Encode Optimization, Netflix announced that they were deploying a custom ladder for each video to maximize encoding quality, bandwidth efficiency, and viewer quality-of-experience. That’s great for Netflix, but how do other producers create the optimum encoding ladders for their content without an unlimited encoding budget and multiple PhD mathematicians on staff?

It’s simple, asserts streaming technologist, Jan Ozer. “Per-title optimization is overkill for most companies not named Netflix,” Ozer explained, “but your encoding ladders should be customized for specific types of content, like talking heads, animations, movies, or screencams. You can achieve much of the benefit of per-title-optimization at a fraction of the cost with the procedures I’ll demonstrate during the webinar.”

Specifically, webinar attendees will learn:

  • The procedure used by Netflix to customize the encoding ladder for each title
  • How the new procedure increases video quality and viewer quality-of-experience, while reducing bandwidth costs on many titles
  • How to use similar but much simpler procedures to create their own custom encoding ladders
  • How to ensure output quality using tools like the SSIMWave Quality of Experience Monitor
  • How encoding with HEVC changes the equation for the better, even for 1080p and smaller video files

Webinar attendees will receive customized encoding ladder templates for low and high motion real-world videos, simple and complex animations, screencam videos, and instructional videos consisting of PowerPoint slides and a talking head.
