Leading Companies Sign Up for Rovi HEVC Beta Program and Access to MainConcept HEVC SDK

Part of Broader Rovi Initiative to Fuel the Rapid Market Adoption of the New Compression Standard

LAS VEGAS, NV(08 Apr 2012)

Rovi Corporation (NASDAQ: ROVI), driving digital entertainment innovation, today announced that over 50 companies, including representatives from some of the leading companies in digital media creation, transcoding, and delivery, have signed up to participate in its HEVC Beta Program. Launched early this year, the program enables participants to gain early access to the MainConcept®HEVC SDK and begin to test and evaluate the new compression standard. Expected to have a significant impact on video distribution and consumption, High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) or H.265 is designed to offer almost double the compression efficiency of H.264 and therefore reduce storage and bandwidth costs, as well as support higher resolutions such as 4K.

Early beta program participants looking to become early suppliers to the broader video industry include, Castis, a media delivery and business management solutions provider for cable and IPTV environments, Wohler Technologies, a leading provider of in-rack audio and video monitoring solutions for the broadcast, motion picture, and professional audio/visual markets, Marex Broadcast Systems, a leader in software design and development related to the broadcast and computer-based multimedia display, and MTI Film, a worldwide provider of innovative solutions for the Post-Production industry.

“As a market leader, with a world-renowned video and audio codec library, we have used Rovi’s MainConcept SDK for a number of years to enhance our solution and foster compatibility with the latest formats and codecs,” said Jongkwan Park, CMO, Castis. “Many of our top-tier customers are now inquiring about HEVC, so we are pleased to be collaborating with Rovi to help address that interest and enable telco and cable TV customers to deliver more high-quality video services while at the same time managing bandwidth congestion.”

“We view the positive response to our beta program and the variety of companies evaluating our MainConcept HEVC SDK as a strong indication that the industry is ready to rapidly embrace the latest compression standard,” said Kanaan Jemili, SVP, Product Management, Rovi Corporation.  “We view HEVC as one of the keys to enabling our customers to improve the consumer entertainment experience, and so the MainConcept SDK is one element of a far broader development effort that is designed to help accelerate market adoption.”

At the center of Rovi’s support for HEVC is DivX Video Service. Announced separately today, DivX Video Service is an end-to-end video solution for high-quality multi-screen video delivery that is designed to integrate with and enhance TV Everywhere and over-the-top entertainment services. Building upon core DivX video technologies and DRM, as well as MainConcept® professional encoders, DivX Video Service offers components for managing the entire video distribution chain from creation and secure delivery to multi-screen playback. This end-to-end approach is critical to enabling customers to offer consistent, flexible, and interoperable HEVC-enable video services.

In addition to outlining the progress of its HEVC Beta Program, Rovi today unveiled MainConcept SDK 9.7, an update to its industry renowned codec library. The latest point release provides support for new high-end professional camera formats (Sony’s XAVC and Panasonic’s AVC-LongG), enables advanced encoding of MPEG-Dash, and continues to be optimized for the latest processor technologies.

Rovi is demonstrating the new MainConcept SDK 9.7 as well as DivX Video Service at the NAB Show 2013 (South Upper Hall #7524), taking place in Las Vegas, NV, April 8-11.
