Eric Burns Appointed Panopto CEO

Rapidly growing video platform provider appoints Burns, co-founder and chief product officer, to lead the next phase of Panopto’s growth

SEATTLE(24 Feb 2015)

Panopto, a leading video platform provider for enterprise and education markets, today announced the appointment of Eric Burns to CEO. Burns is a co-founder of Panopto who has served as the company’s chief product officer since its founding in 2007. William L. Guttman, who has led Panopto’s growth and expansion as CEO since 2010, will continue as the company’s Executive Chairman.

Panopto was founded as a technology transfer from Carnegie Mellon University. Since 2007, the company has experienced tremendous growth. In 2014, Panopto was recognized by Deloitte as one of the fastest-growing technology businesses in North America, and by Gartner as a Leader in the 2014 Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Video Content Management. The company’s video capture and management software is currently used by more than five hundred universities and Fortune 500 companies around the world.

“In the past few years, Panopto has established itself as a leader among enterprise video platforms and has become the fastest-growing video capture and management solution at academic institutions,” said William L. Guttman, Panopto’s executive chairman. “As we look ahead to continued market expansion and success, Eric’s technology vision, proven acumen as a business leader, and understanding of the enterprise and education sectors will propel Panopto to its next stage of growth.”

Throughout his professional and academic career at Panopto, Microsoft, and Carnegie Mellon University, Burns has established a strong track record for technology innovation and business leadership. As co-founder and chief product officer of Panopto, Burns has led the company’s technology vision and development efforts and has played a central role in growing the company to one of the leading video platform providers worldwide. Before founding Panopto, Eric was a software engineer at Microsoft Corporation, where he played an early role in developing search engines with the group that became Bing. He received his Bachelor of Science from Carnegie Mellon University, where he oversaw the design, development, and implementation of digital library and large-scale information search platforms.

“Seven years ago, Panopto set out to build a system that would dramatically improve the way businesses and universities share knowledge using video,” said Eric Burns. “Today, as lecture recording software becomes as prevalent as email on college campuses, and as video becomes the preferred medium for communication within businesses, we see unprecedented opportunity for Panopto. I’m honored to have the opportunity to lead this incredible organization, and to build on the accomplishments that we have achieved to date.”
