Envivio Enhances Ultra HD 4K Encoding Software

New Envivio Muse real-time multiprocessor architecture delivers stunning quality for 4K HEVC video

South San Francisco, CALIF.(04 Apr 2014)

Envivio (NASDAQ: ENVI), a leading provider of software-based video processing and delivery solutions, today announced a new multiprocessor software approach for real-time 4K Ultra HD HEVC (H.265) compression using Envivio Muse encoding software. By distributing HEVC encoding across multiple server nodes, this architecture is designed to provide the power to perform high quality Ultra HD compression on industry-standard servers—enabling seamless migration to HEVC and cost-effective, scalable deployment in the datacenter and cloud.

Muse Ultra HD is designed to encode either one 4Kp60 (progressive video at 60 frames per second) or two simultaneous 4Kp30 (30 frames per second) video signals in HEVC format using a 2-RU Intel-based server. These services can be delivered to Ultra HD-capable devices, including the brand new Ultra HD big screens that have been gaining consumer momentum since their launch at CES this year.

Ultra HD provides stunning video quality with four times as many pixels as today’s 1080p HDTV, twice the frame rate, and a broader color range with the new BT 2020 standard. The HEVC standard reduces bandwidth consumption compared to MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) by 30 to 50 percent, improving the video experience and reducing cost of operations for both Ultra HD big-screen services and existing mobile or over-the-top TV services. Envivio’s software-based architecture radically simplifies the migration from MPEG-2 or AVC to HEVC, enabling a seamless transition to the new codec technology.

“Ultra HD gives consumers a much richer and higher quality experience in the home for premium video services such as high-profile sports events, and HEVC is a game-changing technology quickly gaining traction in the market,” said Julien Signès, Envivio’s president and CEO. “Using our HEVC compression algorithm and leveraging the latest processor enhancements from Intel, we are able to perform demanding 4K video processing while delivering outstanding quality in a software-based architecture, reducing CAPEX and OPEX for both existing and new services.”

Envivio Muse was the first software-based product designed to produce multiple output formats from a single input using a standard Intel-based server, allowing operators to scale their headends with the ever increasing number of formats required for distribution. Today, Muse can not only scale with the number of input and output channels, but with this latest enhancement, it can also scale the resolutions and the frame rate across multiple servers to deliver the most demanding formats, such as Ultra HD HEVC. This provides operators with greatly improved flexibility and scalability, and lowers the costs associated with their video operations.

The HEVC compression technology developed by Envivio is tailored to provide the highest video quality on any screen, from mobile resolutions for smartphones to Ultra HD. The Envivio Muse Ultra HD encoder leverages Envivio’s experience in developing previous codec standards including MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) and MPEG-2.

To ensure end-to-end interoperability for service provider customers and a smooth transition to HEVC, Envivio is working with leading semiconductor and chipset manufacturers including BroadcomMStarSigma DesignsSTMicroelectronics andViXS to deliver Ultra HD video to compatible devices and TV sets.

For the NAB 2014 demonstration, Envivio and ViXS Systems have collaborated to deliver 4Kp60 content encoded with the Muse software and decoded with the newest ViXS professional grade chipset that supports the HEVC standard up to Main 10 Profile.   Envivio’s Ultra HD demonstrations will be on display April 7-10 at NAB 2014 in Las Vegas, booth SU6202.
