D.I.Y. Video Lectures: Ball State University Uses My Mediasite as One-Stop-Shop for Flipped Learning

Desktop publishing tool accelerates content creation; faculty create 12,785 videos in one year

Madison, Wisconsin(24 Feb 2015)

Ball State University faculty use My Mediasite, a desktop video creation and publishing tool by Sonic Foundry, Inc. (NASDAQ: SOFO), the trusted global leader for video creation and management solutions, to support the growing trend of anytime, anywhere rich media creation.

Instructors have more media production needs than ever before thanks to the growth of online and flipped learning, which puts the onus on the student to come to class already having watched the lectures and ready to engage in conversation. However that need can meet the constraints of faculty development and technology training. My Mediasite allows instructors to flip their classes on their own by recording screencasts, slideshows and video using a computer or mobile device’s camera and microphone. Simple editing features allow instructors to fine-tune their video, and all My Mediasite presentations are stored in the secure Mediasite Enterprise Video Platform that integrates with the university’s learning management system, Blackboard.

Since Ball State began using My Mediasite two years ago, it’s seen strong adoption rates among faculty, with 450 currently using it. They’ve created 22,860 presentations — 12,785 of which were created in the last year — totaling more than 8,000 hours of content.

“What excites us about My Mediasite is it really gives faculty the ability to record, curate and archive their own materials through our learning management system without the previously required levels of expertise,” said Richard Edwards, executive director of research for the Integrated Learning Institute (iLearn) at Ball State. “Now, through proper training and support, the expertise can be found in the instructor. Class time is more productive with better discussions, and faculty are able to get more concepts across then they could before.”

“Faculty are very excited about My Mediasite, and are interested in integrating their media with existing learning management systems that are secure. Mediasite is like our secure campus YouTube,” said Greg Batic, learning technologist. “Faculty now have a way of creating content for their courses that’s not restrictive.”

Ball State has used Mediasite for about 15 years for lecture capture and video management and is currently moving 15 years’ worth of rich media, along with the My Mediasite content, to be hosted in Mediasite Cloud.

“By adding My Mediasite to its enterprise video strategy, Ball State is making it as easy as possible to transform the effectiveness of teaching and learning. Video continues to rise to the top of institutions’ technology plans, as they increasingly realize its value,” said Gary Weis, Sonic Foundry CEO. “We are proud to be a technology partner to institutions of this caliber as they foster a video culture on campus with Mediasite at the center of it all, resulting in greater flexibility for students and staff, better grades and a more engaged classroom.”
