Viacom Uses Brightcove Video Cloud for MTV, Nickelodeon Apps

Brightcove announced today that mass-media powerhouse Viacom is using Brightcove Video Cloud to offer native video app experiences for some of its properties. MTV, Nickelodeon, and Comedy Central will launch first, offering native video apps for iOS devices and the Xbox. Viacom promised that Android OS apps are coming, but didn't give a time frame.

The native app experiences will include closed-caption support, viewer authentication, in-stream ad support, and audience measurement tools. Because the apps include TV Everywhere authentication, Brightcove notes that Viacom can use them to stream long-form premium video to pay TV customers.

"Consumers today want to access their favorite shows from any device at any location," says David Kline, Viacom's CIO. "Brightcove's solutions remove the complexity of video publishing and distribution across devices and makes it easy for us to expand our second screen and TV Everywhere offerings."

Viacom didn't indicate which of it's other cable networks -- such as VH1, Logo, and CMT -- will get Brightcove-based video apps.

"Viacom has continued to evolve to meet the fast-growing appetite for premium programming on every screen," says David Mendels. Brightcove's CEO. "We are proud to partner with such a media industry powerhouse to help engage consumers on every device and deliver the highest quality viewing experiences for both video programming and apps."
