Sun Unveils Web Streaming Solution

Sun Microsystems (http://www.sun.com) announced the Sun StorEdge Media Central Streaming Server built on industry-standard Real Time Streaming Protocol/Real Time Protocol standards.

The initial release provides support for Apple's streaming QuickTime technology, but future product releases, will support other open-standard formats.

RealNetworks already has a relationship with Sun, but don't expect quick support for Microsoft's Windows Media.

"As one of the principal architects of RTSP, we are pleased to see Sunincorporate RTSP support into their StorEdge Media Central product," said Ben Rotholtz, GM, Media Systems, RealNetworks. "Our joint focus on standardsextends our close Sun relationship with the plan to have RealSystem G2 on Sunservers and storage co-exist and seamlessly operate with Sun StorEdge MediaCentral."

Sun plans to make the streaming server software available next month for a $2,995 one-server license.
