On2.com Launches On2Movies

On2.com (http://www.on2.com) officially launched its first broadband Web channel, On2Movies today, and announced a national print and online advertising campaign.

On2Movies.com has been in beta for a few months now and will be just one of a network of channels created by On2.com.

"Our launch of On2Movies represents a key milestone as we continue to expand On2.com," said Dan Miller, On2 founder, president and CEO. "Our technology has enabled an unprecedented video-based Web destination featuring high-quality original programming as well as compelling third-party content. We will continue to pursue key strategic partnerships as we create additional On2 entertainment offerings."

On2.com doesn't use Windows Media or Real, but their own VP3 type codec for streaming video. The movies run off a browser window.

On2.com is working with studio partners including Artisan Films, Fox Searchlight, Lions Gate Films, MGM, Miramax Films, New Line Cinema, Paramount Classics, Samuel Goldwyn, Sony-Columbia/Tristar Pictures, Sony Pictures Classics, Twentieth Century Fox, Universal Pictures, USA Films, and Walt Disney Co.-Buena Vista Film Distribution.

On2 has also entered into alliances with AtomFilms, Hollywood Stock Exchange, the Broadcast Film Critics Association, Trailervision, and the Sundance Film Festival.

To promote its launch, On2 is launching a multimillion-dollar national advertising campaign later this month. They company says ads will be carried in print and new media outlets including AOL, New York Times, USA Today, The Wall Street Journal, and Yahoo!.
