Inktomi Announces Traffic Server 4.0

Inktomi (www.inktomi.com) announced the release of its Inktomi Traffic Server 4.0, software for caching Web data including streaming files.

This new release uses the Linux operating system. Inktomi says that the software now offers "significantly faster performance than previous releases".

"Today's announcement broadens Inktomi's reach withone of the most flexible caching solution available tomeet evolving enterprise requirements for robustInternet infrastructure within their networks," saidEd Haslam, chief strategist, Network Products Divisionat Inktomi. "Supporting the widest range of platformsand data formats, Traffic Server software is optimizedfor both enterprises and service providers seeking toreduce bandwidth requirements, accelerate networkperformance and deploy a variety of edge services."

Inktomi also offers an appliance solution (called Inktomi Traffic Server Engine) which is powered by 3Com and Intel.

On Wednesday, Inktomi inked a deal with Hughes Network Systems, a provider of satellite broadband services. Inktomi's caching technology will be deployed in Hughes' Network Operations Centers (NOCs) worldwide. The agreement actually targets the enterprise and home markets.
