Brightcove Adds Live Streaming to Video Cloud

Article Featured Image

The year of live video continues, this time with Brightcove, which is adding live event streaming to its Video Cloud platform. Customers will be able to mange live events from within their Brightcove dashboard, saving the files for later video-on-demand (VOD) playback.

Customers will upload live streams from any software-based encoder. Brightcove will then use Zencoder Live Transcoding to convert streams into adaptive bitrate RTMP and HLS streams, serving both desktop and mobile viewers. Customers can use Brightcove's pre-configured SD/HD rendition sets to provide streams for a range of network conditions, or they can customize the streams they offer.

Brightcove is letting customers monitor their live streams with real-time analytics, so they can check on the viewer count and the quality of the streams that those viewers are receiving. Customers can also use the dashboard to add bumpers, watermarks, and pre-roll advertisements (there's no ability to add mid-roll or post-roll ads). Live streams are automatically saved as VOD files for later playback. Surprisingly, the service lacks the ability to mark ad insertion points in the live stream, then serve targeted ads at those points during VOD delivery.

Pricing for live streaming is based on the number of hours streamed and the number of SD and HD streams needed. The service is launching in beta and is available for Video Cloud Pro and Enterprise customers.

"We wanted to make streaming live events effortless," says Jeff Whatcott, chief marketing officer at Brightcove. "And so, with buy-in from our customers, we created Video Cloud Live to enable them to manage the entire lifecycle of a live video event -- from easy set-up to the automatic population of an on-demand library."
