Best Student Talent of the Year Award

SHOES ON, an interactive movie project developed at the Hochschule für Fernsehen und Film, Munich/Germany has won the Best Student Talent of the Year Award in this year's MILIA NEW TALENT COMPETION.

The aim of the competition - in which 110 Universities from 22 countries with 131 projects took part - was to bring together a selection of the best multimedia student talents from the best multimedia courses worldwide.

15 projects that were selected in the first place - coming from such diverse fields as media art, edutainment, computer game or hardware development - were presented together with the multimedia courses they were developed in at the NEW TALENT PAVILION in the frame of MILIA 2000 - "The World's Interactive Content marketplace" at Cannes, February 15 - 18.

SHOES ON has been developed during a workshop of the MEDIA II project SAGAs Writing Interactive Fiction, organised by the Munich Academy for TV and Film. It successfully combines movie and game elements creating a playful scene in which the user is able to bring a love story to a happy ending. SHOES ON received the Best Student Talent of the Year Award with a prize sum of 25.000 French Francs.

SAGAs Writing Interactive Fiction is one of the few European initiatives to further content development for interactive media. In the frame of the MEDIA II Programme the Munich Academy for Film and Television organises bi-annually workshops for European participants.

SHOES ON tells a story about five persons at a bus stop. A man equipped with black boots has missed the bus and he is just about to meet a beautiful woman wearing a set of temptingly high heels - when the meeting is suddenly abruptly disturbed by the appearance of other bystanders. There is a Jogger, an Old Lady and a Strange Man dressed in a brown leather coat. Of course, the man would like to be alone with the girl again - and we as the user have all the means of helping him - and her. Strange things will occur in this little story which is told only by showing the feet of the contestants. SHOES ON is creating a "filmic room" where time and space are coherent. The user is navigating/moving throughout a continuum of seamless cuts and transitions - influencing the course of action within one single film scene.

Shoes on has been developed during the Interactive Digital Moviemaking Workshop (Munich, March 12 - 18 1999) headed by Chris Hales in the frame of SAGAs Writing Interactive Fiction.

SAGAs Writing Interactive Fiction is a joint initiative of the MEDIA II Programme Training, the Hochschule für Fernsehen und Film München and the Drehbuchwerk-statt München aimed at content development for interactive media.
