In 2012, and for a considerable period after, Flash will continue to be pervasive on websites, and even potentially, mobile devices. The recent announcement, or should I say comment, made in a blog by a senior member of the Adobe team, has set the tech world buzzing. A comment about Flash supporting delivery (or in this case potentially not) to mobile devices in the future has some tech bloggers playing the dirge. In many cases, these "Apple-flavored Kool-Aid drinking, technology pundits" are making sweeping, all-encompassing statements about the demise of Flash. They are sounding the death knell prematurely.

As a technology services provider who is in the business of distributing rich media content over the Internet, we never marry ourselves to one technology. We leverage best of breed technology to satisfy the needs of our customers. Flash is one of those technologies. In the enterprise world, streaming technology service providers need to accommodate customer environments with multiple browsers, different codecs, various plug-ins, containers and security implementations. They need to provide these services all while providing interactivity, analytics, scale, flexibility and mobile delivery. And, I didn't even mention backwards compatibility. Let's not forget all the legacy IE users in the enterprise; those browsers don't support HTML5.

HTML5 is part of our platform today and will continue to be part of our future. The problem is that HTML5, from a feature, functionality and development tool perspective, is not ready for prime time in the enterprise. Flash is the here and now and will definitely be alive and well in the enterprise in 2012.
