Telefonica's CDN: Be a Cheetah or an Eagle, not a Duck
Spain's Telefonica might be entering the CDN market, but it's not trying to be all things to all people, said a Content Delivery Summit presentation.
Telefonica came to the recent Content Delivery Summit in New York City not to challenge the current CDN market, but to work with it.
"What we believe, and where we think our role is in this ecosystem, we think we have a very, very specific role. We are network operators," explained Gonzalo de la Vega, director of business development and global delivery services for Telefonica. "The N in CDN starts for network, so we really think we can help in that very last area."
During his presentation, he offered a curious example from the animal kingdom. Eagles are perfectly designed to fly, he said, and do it well. Cheetahs are perfectly designed to run, while sharks are perfectly efficient swimmers.
Ducks can do all of those things, de la Vega, offered, but not well.
"We don't want to be the ducks in here. We don't want to say, 'We'll do a bit of the running, and we'll do a bit of the flying, and we'll do a bit of the swimming, and we can do everything because we're Telefonica and we rock 'n roll.' That's really not what we want to do. We understand where we can really provide value and where we really have something to say is in the very last box of that content value chain we saw before, where the content needs to be delivered. We operate networks. We've historically operated networks for dealing with voice, for dealing with data, and now for dealing with content."
Telefonica wants to works with partners, not eat the whole pie, de la Vega explained. To view his full presentation, scroll down for the video and download the slides.
