Singapore Armed Forces' Streaming Plan of Attack

Singapore takes its armed forces seriously. The city-state is neighbor to Malaysia to the north, with a population of 21.8 million; and Indonesia to the south, with a population of 225 million. In stark contrast, Singapore has a population of just 4.1 million. Although Singapore has a friendly relationship with its neighbors, the numbers nevertheless speak for themselves.

No wonder that Singapore's Ministry of Defense is eager to invest in the latest weapons and technologies for its armed forces -- including streaming technologies. To increase public awareness and encourage recruitment, both the Army and Navy have made use of streaming video on the Ministry of Defense Web site.

QuickTime and RealPlayer-compatible clips demonstrate how combat formations function in a battle scenario, or how to effectively camouflage yourself at ground level. A longer clip also gives a potted history of the Singapore armed forces.

The Ministry of Defense is planning to post more video clips on its site in the future. "There have been numerous requests from the public for more illustrations of what we do, and we feel that videos are the best way to do this," says Marvin Kwan of the Ministry of Defense Public Affairs department. "We have our own in-house production department, and it would be useful for the public to know more about the Singapore armed forces."

As all adult male Singaporeans are obliged to serve in the armed forces for their national service, it is likely that the Ministry of Defense's streaming tactics will be appreciated.
